Les petites Lumières

Training: Philo-artistic workshops for children and adolescents

The leaders of tomorrow will be people of great wisdom, which is why we have offered to train the Venetians to set up philosophical workshops for children and adolescents. The first training of Les petites Lumières took place in October-November-December 2021. We hope that many Petites Lumières philosophical circles will be born in the Venetian archipelago.

The Petites Lumières project is to accompany children in the discovery of philosophy in a fun way. This project combines reflection and creation, through the practice of philosophical dialogue combined with artistic expression.

In 2016, UNESCO formalized the creation of a UNESCO Chair on “ The practice of philosophy with children: a basis for intercultural dialogue and social transformation ”.
Les Petites Lumières have the honor of being partners of the Chair!

We are also official members of ICPIC  ( The International Council of Philosophical Inquiry with Children ), the leading body supporting initiatives to facilitate philosophical inquiry with young people.

The objective of this training is to bring the children to:

  • Think by and for themselves by developing independent reasoning ; the child constructs himself as an autonomous subject who thinks in order to work out “his” answer, and not to find the “right” answer, the one expected by the teacher, for example.
  • To flourish, acquire self-confidence, to learn to identify, name and therefore better understand one's emotions and, consequently, those of others.
  • Develop empathy, cooperation, tolerance for difference .
  • To be more responsible as citizens and as human beings. In this sense, the workshop corresponds entirely to a form of civic education .

– Presentation of the different methods (Lipman, Tozzi, AGSAS-Lévine, Socratic)
– Analysis of articles and videos
– Presentation of the holistic method small lights
– The posture of the speaker
– Conditioning exercises: practical work of philosophy workshops

Module 2

To do philosophy is to work with concepts.
But often we forget a fundamental component at the base of our processes of abstraction and thought: our body. It is from perception, from what we see with our eyes, from what we hear with our ears, from what we touch with our hands, in short, it is from our sensory experience of the world, of others and of ourselves that we create the conditions of possibility for reflection. Without a body there is no thought. And often, too often, when we do philosophy we forget that. This in-depth module will allow participants to experience the holistic method of Little Lights, which provides for the articulation of an artistic practice (for example mime, painting, drawing, etc.) with a verbal discussion, while placing the perceptual body at the heart of the constituent processes of thought.

In a philosophy-art articulation thus conceived, the participants are therefore the actors of an artistic practice where the creative gesture of the body is the source of a philosophical questioning.

The topics covered will be:
– The relationship between philosophy and art
– Experimentation of a philo-art workshop which provides for the use of artistic supports as teaching tools (the participants are spectators )
– Presentation and analysis of the artistic supports which can be used in a workshop with children (paintings, films, sculptures, photographs, plays…)
– Experimentation of a philo-art workshop according to the holistic method (the participants are actors ): philosophical questioning from a practice artistic
– Presentation and analysis of artistic practices that can be used in a workshop with children (modeling clay, painting, collage, mime, dance, music…)
– Art as an illustration of thought: plastic production as an extension of reflection
– Opportunity to observe a workshop with the children led by Les Petites Lumières

Module 3

This in-depth module will allow participants to review their experience of leading philosophy workshops, to better understand the issues, strengths and possible difficulties.
We will analyze in particular the difficulties that may have arisen in relation to the setting, the management of the group of children, the facilitator himself, the structure which hosted the workshops. Through a collective reflection, we will try to respond to these difficulties in order to overcome them. Part of the training will also be devoted to the design of workshops (in order to refresh and consolidate the key notions) and to putting participants into situations.
